The 41-year-old veteran aims to reclaim dominance in the half-marathon on Sunday to secure a record fifth title in the event.
He faces a youthful field led by Thabang Mosiako and George Kusche, with the R50,000 winner’s prize serving as additional incentive for the Hollywood Athletics Club star.
“The field is highly competitive compared to previous years,” said Mokoka.
“We have strong youngsters like Thabang and George, so it won’t be easy. I’m going there chasing my fifth title. The prize money is also a big motivation.”
While the Two Oceans ultra-marathon took centre stage on Saturday, Mokoka admitted he would have preferred the schedule reversed.
Mokoka is using the race as a build-up for the Cape Town Marathon on 24 May, when he intends to challenge global superstar Eliud Kipchoge, who will be making his debut in South Africa.
Despite the Kenyan’s presence, the three-time CTM winner remains undeterred in his pursuit of a fourth title.
“It’s great to have a superstar like Kipchoge here — it will definitely boost the race and attract attention.
“But my goal doesn’t change. I want to fight for a fourth Cape Town Marathon title. I respect him a lot and welcome the challenge," he concluded.
