After taking down Charlie Edwards in London, Sikho “Sequence” Nqothole returns to South Africa as the official IBF No.1 super-flyweight contender in the world.
Nqothole touched down at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday as a boxer with renewed belief, after a period of more than 18 months grinding his way back to the top.
His manager, No Doubt Management’s Colin Nathan said this on Nqothole’s path to the IBF No.1 spot…
There was a fight in Mexico which I suggested that Nqothole not take against Rene Calixto. Sequence lost by a hairline decision, and upon returning to South Africa we sat down and I was stern with him, ‘This loss has set you back 18-24 months, but if you listen and be patient, I will get you into position. I just told him to have faith.
“Exactly two years after signing with No Doubt Management, he’s got himself into this great position.”
Nathan went on to say, “The magnitude of Friday night’s win has given massive hope to South African boxing. We have the talent to compete with the best in the world and win, and Sequence’s fight proved that once again.
“There is something very special about a fighter winning in the opponent’s backyard, and even more so when they do it as an underdog.”
Hailing from Mthatha, Eastern Cape, Nqothole has extended his streak to four victories in succession since that loss to Calixto in May 2024.
The 31-year-old is now in prime position to deliver South Africa another world title.
