Stellies close in on Orlando Pirates defender Thabiso Lebitso

SABC Sport has established that Stellenbosch FC are in discussions with Orlando Pirates over the signing of defender Thabiso Lebitso.

The Winelands outfit are looking to reinforce their squad following a number of departures at the end of the 2025/26 season, with coach Gavin Hunt eager to strengthen key areas ahead of the new campaign.

Among those exits were several senior players who formed part of the core of the team in recent seasons, leaving Stellenbosch with work to do in the transfer market.

The release of right back Kazie Enyinnaya has also forced Stellies to search for a replacement in that position.

Lebitso joined Pirates from Chippa United in January 2024 under then-coach Jose Riveiro and quickly established himself as a useful option, contributing important performances and goals.

However, the defender found opportunities harder to come by during the recently concluded season under Abdeslam Ouaddou, featuring in just 14 matches across all competitions, including only seven appearances in the Betway Premiership.

Those limited minutes have fuelled speculation that the player could be surplus to requirements as Pirates continue to reshape their squad.

SABC Sport understands Stellenbosch are now in advanced talks with the Buccaneers over a move for the versatile defender ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Lebitso arrives with considerable topflight experience, having made close to 100 appearances for Chippa United before joining Pirates, where he has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons.

While negotiations are ongoing, the public broadcaster can confirm that the player is edging closer to an exit from the Soweto giants.

Pirates are also expected to make announcements regarding the futures of several players whose contracts are due to expire, with Makhehleni Makhaula and Sipho Mbule among the notable names still awaiting clarity.
