Gauteng Golden Fireballs claim top spot in 2025 TNL first leg

Gauteng Golden Fireballs coach Dr Elsje Jordaan says they are happy with their six-match unbeaten run to wrap up the Telkom Netball League power week 1.

This after the Johannesburg side claimed a 100% record to secure top position in Division 1 first leg at the Sun City Superbowl.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Jordaan says this is the final results they were hoping for, however adds that they are aware that it is still early stages of the tournament.

''We are very happy with the start of power week 1 for Fireballs. The six out of six wins is exactly how we wanted to start but we are also very realistic to know that it is only the start of the league. We look to maintain our momentum into the second leg,'' said Jordaan.

Jordaan says that the first leg gave the Johannesburg team an opportunity to test new combinations, but pleased to see how the players have settled.

''Our combinations are settling nicely - we have been a strong side over the last four years. But I have noticed that people don't understand that combinations have to be tested on court, especially after training. But I must say, our players are settling quite well,'' added Jordaan.

After a week of securing back to back wins, the Fireballs see themselves on top of Division 1 log with 12 points, just two points ahead of the defending champions Free State Crinums.

Jordaan unpacks the overall team performance in the first leg.

"I thought the standard of the game was actually quite high in the first power week. The big teams really came at us, and that is what we enjoy - competitive netball. I also need to highlight the Aloes were our surprise package this season, we didn't think they would approach us in a manner they did, it is good for the sport,'' she expressed.

Jordaan says they have now moved on to covering their first leg analysis, to help prepare for power week 2.
