Luane Smith excited to grace TNL as 2025 debutant

Gauteng Golden Fireballs new signing Luane Smith is excited to participate in the upcoming Telkom Netball League as a debutant, stating that it is a stepping stone to becoming a Spar Protea player.

The 19-year-old goal attack is the youngest of the 12-player squad to represent Johannesburg in the 2025 TNL campaign.

In an exclusive interview with SABC Sport, Smith adds that she looks to make her mark as the tournament’s newcomer.

‘It is a great honour for me to join a team that has a rich history and has won the TNL championship before. This is a stepping stone for me as I look to become a Spar Protea player one day,’’ said Smith.

The Fast 5 netball teenage sensation was  part of the team that represented South Africa at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

She reflects on how that impacted on her career.

“Being a part of the SA Fast 5 team has given me a taste of what competitive netball is. The experience at the Commonwealth You Game gave me a platform to expose my talent and allowed me be spotted by local teams. This reiterates the fact that I want to take netball seriously,’’ added Smith.

The Fireballs are one of the most successful teams in the TNL, having won the championship 2022 under head coach Dr Elsje Jordaan.

“It is such a big privilege to be coached by Dr Jordaan, I have been following her career since I was young. I am more than happy to be a part of the Fireballs camp under her leadership,’’ she expressed.

The 2025 TNL season will kick-off from next Saturday in Sun City. Smith further shares her expectations ahead of the tournament.

“I am very grateful that Dr Jordan and coach Bongi Msomi chose me. I look forward to playing in the TNL for the first time and contributing positively to help my team to wrap up the season on a high,’’ she concluded.
