Landile Ngxeke: I have waited a long time to become World Champion

Bantamweight bruiser Landile “Mandown” Ngxeke believes he is destined to become the new IBF World Champion on Saturday, December 13 in Mexico City.

Rising from humble beginnings in the Eastern Cape, Ngxeke has recorded several significant achievements in his career, ranging from national and African titles to intercontinental crowns.

On December 13, in enemy territory, “Mandown” will go toe-to-toe with undefeated Mexican, Jose Salas Reyes, and he is determined to take his world title shot with both hands.

“Preparation has been really good with my trainer and manager, and we are ready to go to Mexico," Ngxele told SABC Sport.

“My last fight was against another Mexican, so I know that these guys are tough. I joined Colin Nathan and No Doubt Management with the hopes of becoming a world champion, and now I have my chance.”

At only 7 years of age, Ngxeke discovered his love for boxing, and he turned pro at the age of 19, but his upcoming fight will be a defining moment for his legacy in the sport.

He is adamant that the Mexican challenger has not faced anybody like him before, further emphasising that he has the mindset and skillset to upset the hometown hero.

“I moved from East London to Joburg to become a World Champion, and I’m not going to lie, I’m over the moon because of this opportunity," he said.

“It’s simple. If you believe in yourself, you can make it in this life.”

The 30-year-old will soon fight outside of his home country for the very first time, and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Hekkie Budler, Sivenathi Nontshinga, Brian Mitchell, ‘Baby’ Jake Matlala, and many more.

Like some of his predecessors, “Mandown” stands on the verge of a truly historic and legendary feat.
