Iga Swiatek crashes out of French Open in statement performance from Marta Kostyuk

Iga Swiatek admitted she was "off" and struggling to control her game after a shock 7-5, 6-1 defeat to Marta Kostyuk in the French Open fourth round ended the four-time champion's latest bid for Roland Garros glory.

Swiatek, the world No 3 and long regarded as the "Queen of Clay," was undone by a mixture of rising pressure and uncharacteristic errors as Kostyuk extended her remarkable clay-court run to 16 straight wins.

The Ukrainian, seeded 15th, had never taken a set from Swiatek in three previous meetings but seized control after a tense opening set on Court Philippe-Chatrier, capitalising on key double faults and loose errors at crucial moments.

After Swiatek briefly led 4-3 in the first set, she immediately surrendered the break and was broken again late on, allowing Kostyuk to edge ahead. The second set then turned into a one-way surge, with Kostyuk racing through six consecutive games to complete the win and reach her first French Open quarter-final.

"It is harder a bit to handle stress for me in the last year," Swiatek said. "Today I felt off and I did mistakes that I didn't want to do."

The Ukrainian world No 15, who had never taken a set from Swiatek in three previous meetings, extended her unbeaten clay-court run in 2026 to 16 matches and reached her first French Open quarter-final.

"I woke up only thinking about what an unbelievable day I have to live today," Kostyuk said. "I'm not playing tennis to win, I'm playing tennis because I love it."

Kostyuk will face fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the last eight.
