ASA boss James Moloi to contest for a seat on World Athletics Council

Athletics South Africa (ASA) President James Moloi, is contesting for a role as one of the World Athletics Council members.

World Athletics recently revealed a list comprising 31 candidates hailing from various corners of the globe, all vying for election to the international federation’s governing body, known as the world athletics council.

The selection process will culminate at the World Athletics Congress on August 17, just two days before the commencement of the highly anticipated World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Within the council, a total of 18 positions are up for grabs, encompassing one President, four Vice-Presidents (including a minimum of one female representative), and 13 individual Council Members.

 “As a leader, it is important to challenge and push your limits. Having a background as both a former athlete and a seasoned sports administrator, I approach this opportunity with nothing to lose and everything to gain. It presents a chance to acquire new knowledge, establish my presence, and showcase my abilities. It is truly an honour to have my name alongside some of the world’s finest administrators, and I am humbled by the experience,” Moloi told SABC Sport.   

Candidates for Council members are James Moloi (South Africa), Khaled Amara (Tunisia), Yuko Arimori (Japan), Beatrice Ayikoru (Uganda), Willie Banks (USA), Bader Naser (Bahrain), Cydonie Mothersill (Cayman), Alberto Danger (Cuban), Jean Garcia (France), Mawal El Moutawakel (Morocco), Natalia Dobrynska (Ukraine), Faith Cintimar (Turkey), Sylvia Barlag (Netherlands), Talib Al Saffar (Irag), Garth Gayle (Jamaica), Nan Wang (China), Erich Teigamagi (Estonia), Tigor Tanjung (Indonesia), Muhammad Sahi (Pakistan), Donna Raynor (Bermuda), and Annette Purvis ( New Zealand).

In his biography, Moloi highlights his extensive experience as the sports manager for the City of Johannesburg, a role he has dedicated himself to for an impressive 33 years and counting. With a deep commitment to the organization’s vision, Moloi pledges to elevate athletics to new heights. His approach revolves around prioritizing the interest of athletes and fostering robust relationships within the entire World Athletics community.

Moloi served as the former President of Central Athletics for eight years, and as the chairperson of the Malcolm X Athletics Club for six years from 2004 to 2010.

“I am committed to upholding the stability, sustainability, and the principle of corporate governance. Ensuring these crucial elements are adhered to is paramount. I will strive to create ample opportunities for skill development within the member Federations. My aim is to enhance the quality and quantity of athletics programs offered by Member Federations, thus contributing to their overall growth and improvement, if I get selected to serve on the council,” added Moloi.
