South Africa U19 youngster smashes international records in Harare

SA Under-19 sensation Jorich van Schalkwyk became the first player in history to score a Youth One Day International double century, when he powered to 215 runs off a mere 153 deliveries in their win over hosts Zimbabwe in their tri-series opener in Harare.

Just days ago the 18-year-old set the national record for the highest individual score – an unbeaten 164 – against Bangladesh in Benoni, and has now toppled Hasitha Boyagoda’s 191 mark that has stood since 2018.

His monumental innings helped South Africa to a 385-run total, another record surpassing their own 359 finish against Namibia 13 years ago.

That’s not all in as far as the records that tumbled in this historic match.

Following the Zimbabweans being also outplayed with the ball to be dismissed for a timid 107 all-out, it meant the 278-run winning margin was also a new record beating the 209-run victory from that same match back in 2012.

In a confidence boosting display by van Schalkwyk, he shared a 178-run third wicket partnership with co-captain Jason Rowles, and then a 105-run one with Paul James.

He was unlucky to not see out the innings as he was dismissed with only just over two overs left.

Though soundly beaten by their neighbours Zimbabwe Under-19 did have something to smile about with Tatenda Chimugoro returning figures of 6/62 with the ball, while Enathi Khitshini and Bayanda Majola claimed four and three wickets apiece for SA Under-19.

The YODI tri-series, which also involves Bangladesh, will run up until August 10 at the Sunrise Sports Club in Harare.
