The Johannesburg leg will be the final stop in the five-race series, which also includes Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane, and Gqeberha. It’s in Jozi where the elite champions will be crowned, with the overall points leader walking away with a R200,000 cash prize and a brand-new Hyundai.
The 10km record holder,Xaba, has already made her mark on the series, having won the opening two races in Cape Town and Durban.
Xaba, who is currently in Limpopo to defend her national 21.1km title in Phalaborwa this weekend, says she is eyeing a historic season.
“My goal is to win every race this year and become a three-time Grand Prix champion.
I still have the hunger to succeed and compete at the highest level,” said Xaba.
She will look to continue her winning streak at the next event in Tshwane on 2 August before heading to Gqeberha in September, all in preparation for a grand finish in Johannesburg.
Athletics South Africa Athletes Commission Chairperson Kesa Molotsane believes Xaba is on course for another title, praising her current form.
“She’s been incredibly consistent, running sub-32-minute races. We all saw how strong she was in Durban. I believe she has what it takes to win the series again,” Molotsane told SABC Sport.
To accommodate growing interest, the race has been moved from its previous venue at the Wanderers Club Stadium in Rosebank to the bigger Marks Park venue.
This year’s race will also feature 5km and 10km distances.
Entry fees are set at R180 for both the 5km fun walk and 10km run, with a R60 temporary licence fee applicable for those without a permanent running licence, bringing the total to R240 for such runners.
South African netball legend Bongiwe Msomi has been unveiled as the official brand ambassador for this year’s challenge.
