Kyle Blignaut eyes national shot-put record

Former South African shot-put champion Kyle Blignaut has his eyes firmly set on rewriting the history books by breaking the national record of 21.97m, held by Janus Robberts since 2001.

Blignaut, who boasts a personal best of 21.26m, believes 2025 could finally be the year he cracks the elusive mark.

Despite finishing runner-up to rising talent Aiden Smith at the national senior championships in Potchefstroom in April, Blignaut remains undeterred.

He has been competing in European league meetings to sharpen his form and says training in Italy with his new group has brought renewed focus and drive.

"Yes, I would like to get close to 22m, I've been putting in the work and some of the training distances have reflected that. I think at some point in the year if the programme aligns and things go well, I can get that one solid throw that gets me either to 22m which will be the South African record and African record or just below that,” Blignaut said.

“So, that's what I'm aiming for this year, to get close to 22m as possible. I want to break the South African and African record, that's the goal and I'm optimistic about that. I think there's a good chance of that happening."

The 25-year-old moved to Italy last year after the passing of his longtime coach, Pierre Blignaut.

Adjusting to life in Europe hasn’t been easy, but he’s slowly finding his rhythm.

Blignaut says the new environment is challenging but necessary for his athletic growth, although he admits he would like to return home in the future.

"It's been interesting, it's definitely something to get used to but I think I've made the transition well. I've adapted quite well but South Africa still stays home, so it's wonderful to come visit, to compete at the National Championships, to train here,” he added.

“I think no matter where you go in the country, South Africa is just part of who you are. So, I'd like to move back one day and just continue my training here but that will be somewhere in the future. I think for now where I am is the best place for my athletics career."
