Proteas Women coach preparing to face spin at T20 World Cup

Proteas Women coach Mandla Mashimbyi has acknowledged that there’s still a bit of work to do before heading to the T20 World Cup in England next month, not least of which is getting comfortable with facing spin bowling at the tournament.

While Mashimbyi says he’s largely satisfied with his team’s preparations, he expressed concern about the middle order when it comes to that aspect of the game, and believes that this is one of the areas to work on. South Africa will hope to be third time lucky after losing the final of this World Cup in both of the last two editions.

"We do have a little bit of work to do. I am really happy with where the team is at the moment. There are a couple of things we have to make sure we work on, especially with the middle order, looking after the spinners because most teams are going to bowl spin in the middle period. So once we get comfortable with that, I think we're going to put a lot of teams under pressure," said Mashimbyi

Mashimbyi says their bowling unit looks solid judging by how they performed in the recent India tour, where they won the five-match T20 series 4-1. He believes that there was maturity within their bowling, something that hasn’t always been the case this summer with a lot of freebies handed to opposition teams.

"I just feel from a bowling point of view we also showed maturity; we showed clairty with regards to our plans. We executed probably 80 percent of the time, and that's what made it tough for India to score the big scores. So I'm really happy with where the bowling is at now as well."

He added that the same energy used in that series is the one they’ll need to win the World Cup, and just need clarity of thought with their field plans to maximise their chances of taking wickets. The Proteas Women also need to do some work on their catching, which has been their Achilles heel in the last few months.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup begins on June 12 when hosts England take on Sri-Lanka, while South Africa and Australia square up the next day.
