Proteas chase 'probably equivalent to 438-game' - Reeza Hendricks

Proteas batter Reeza Hendricks has drawn comparisons between their record T20 run-chase against West Indies at SuperSport Park on Sunday and the record 438 ODI against Australia in 2006.

South Africa chased down West Indies' 258/5 total posted in the second T20I in Centurion on Sunday and now hold the record for the highest successful run chase after eclipsing the 246/4 achieved by Bulgaria against Serbia in June last year.

Credit would undoubtedly go to Quinton de Kock and Hendrick's outstanding opening partnership which yielded 152 runs in 10.5 overs, including a record 102-run slog in the opening six-over powerplay.

"Ja, I don't think everything has sunk in yet. To be part of that partnership in that powerplay... Ja, we'll obviously reflect and see what we did," said Hendricks.

"But ja, it was unbelievable to be part of and, obviously, Quinton on the other end playing the way he did, and I obviously could just play second fiddle. But it was special to be a part of."

De Kock eventually fell for 100 – his first-ever in T20Is, which he achieved in just 43 balls and included nine fours and eight sixes – while Hendricks was dismissed for an impressive 68 off 28 balls, also chipping in with 11 fours and two sixes.

"That's the Quinny I know. Obviously in cricket, it doesn't come off all the time, and today, fortunately for him, it came off when the team needed it most," he added.

"So, ja, that's how he plays. The wicket, obviously, was really good again and allowed for his stroke play, and it was one of those days [where] he found the middle and, ja, a special innings to witness, especially from the other end."

Johnson Charles smashed a 39-ball century to set the visitors on their way to a joint sixth-highest T20I total, but, like Jaques Kallis' quip after Australia posted 434/4 at the Wanderers just over 17 years ago, Kagiso Rabada also joked that the Windies were a few runs short of setting a winning score.

"Funny enough, when we walked off the field, KG actually said they're 10 runs short. So, ja, it probably relates to Jaques Kallis' comment as well," revealed Hendricks.

"So, look, we managed to get over the line and played this incredible game, and obviously today I suggested it's probably equivalent to the 438-game, so to be part of it is quite good."
