Kewuti surfaces at SuperSport after Maritzburg exit

Former Maritzburg United midfielder Zukile Kewuti has made his way to SuperSport United after leaving the Midlands.

SABC Sport has been told that coach Gavin Hunt is contemplating adding him to his roster as Matsatsantsa look to continue their push in the DStv Premiership race, which resumes on December 30.

The 27-year-old fell down the pecking order at Maritzburg and had not made a single appearance prior to a decision to cut ties, and it’s understood coach John Maduka, who has also since been sacked, had no room for Kewuti.

Hunt has invited the player to train with SuperSport ahead of the resumption of the league later this month, but the two parties have not yet discussed a formal offer for the ex-Cape Town City star.

Kewuti made 19 appearances for the Team of Choice while coach Ernst Middendorp was still in charge last season, but was overlooked by Maduka.

He had joined the club following a six-month loan spell at AmaZulu, where he was favoured by then-coach Benni McCarthy, but a permanent deal from City fizzled out when the two clubs could not agree a transfer fee believed to be in the region of R1-million.

SuperSport are currently third on the Premiership table and could jump at the opportunity to snap up a free agent with Kewuti’s experience, but that will all depend on whether the player impresses Hunt during his assessment.

The midfielder can put pen to paper at a club of his choice when the registration window re-opens next month because of his status as a free agent.
