Injury setbacks make it Chiefs’ worst season – Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane says he doesn’t recall his predecessors dealing with the injury count they have faced this season.

Zwane speaks with authority having been assistant under Gavin Hunt and Stuart Baxter prior to taking over the reins.  Amakhosi have been blowing hot and cold, and Zwane puts it down to the constant changes he’s had to make through losing key players.

"When some of the players are on song and doing well, then if they are not suspended then it's because of injuries. We had a very difficult season,” Zwane claimed.

“For me, this is the worst season, ever since I've been here at Kaizer Chiefs even before when I was assistant and before when I was with the development, I don't think any other coach has been in the situation that we are in at the moment", he added.

Zwane's main focus in his maiden season has been to rebuild a team with a lot of new faces, given his squad is significantly different from what Hunt and Baxter had. He admits it has not been easy.

"We've been chopping and changing. Remember we started with Khama [Billiat], at some point as the top man, before Christian [Sailie] came on board, Caleb  Bimenyimana also came when had already started the season, and we're always looking for combinations.

"Sometimes you never understand because when you're looking for combinations when certain players come when we're already under pressure because they're also expected to come and deliver.”

Zwane, who congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns on their sixth successive league title, is now focused on guiding Chiefs to a runner-up finish and a return to the Caf Champions League.

Amakhosi are fourth on the log, tied on 40 points with Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, with six games remaining,
