UWC look forward to the 2025 Womens Varsity Football final against UJ

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasonke Mbuli says they expect a tough contest when they face the University of Johannesburg Ladies in the 2025 Women’s Varsity Football final.

This after they edged Wits 1-0 in the semifinals to keep their hopes alive of winning their third University championship in a row.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says their advantage is that they have already survived a few tough fixtures building up to the final, which will take place on 19 September.

"We know that the final against UJ will be tough. They are one of the strongest sides in the competition, but our advantage is that throughout the tournament, we have played some really tough teams like TUKS and TUT."

Mbuli further unpacks their hard-fought win against Wits in the semifinal, stating that they were well prepared and knew how Wits would approach them.

"WITS defended really well. They set up with a resolute low block and looked to counter us at any given opportunities.

"We did hit the upright eight times, I think, and at some stage I genuinely thought we were not going to win.

"Sometimes we were not calm, and when we entered the final third we were impatient, but I'm happy that we found a way through."

The 43-year-old mentor says they will start preparing for the final next Monday, and shares her expectations against UJ.

"We are starting to prepare for the final on Monday, and we know that they are a very energetic side, so it's going to be an interesting encounter."

Mbuli adds that winning the Varsity championship will not have much impact on their Hollywoodbets Super League performance, as they usually use a different squad compared to top-flight action.
