Themba Zwane not bothered by age following contract extension

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane says he is yet to contemplate retirement after putting pen to paper on a short-term deal at the club.

The Brazilians announced earlier this month that the Bafana Bafana midfielder would be staying on for another year beyond the current season, ending speculation over his future.

Zwane had been injured for most of the campaign, which usually has a negative impact on contract talks, however, Sundowns felt otherwise.

The 35-year-old insists calling it quits is the furthest thing from his mind.

"To be honest, as long as I am feeling fit, fresh, and fit, I will keep on going, because I want to win more, and I still want to represent my country," emphasised Zwane.

Asked whether he will look back at his career as one of the greatest of all time, Zwane said he preferred to leave the debate to the public and the Sundowns fans who’ve backed the club in good and tough times.

"My job is just simply to do what I do, and try to set a good example for the youngsters. I really want to thank the fans for their support of me and the team, and they must know that we appreciate them. They are the reason why we want to keep on winning trophies," declared the creative midfielder.

Zwane admitted that his injury, suffered while on national team duty back in October, was a major setback which he got through thanks to the support of former teammates like Teko Modise and Sibusiso Vilakazi.

"It was a difficult situation for me, but luckily, with the support of my family, my team, and the technical staff, I managed to stay focused and always stayed positive," stated Zwane.

‘Mshishi’ added that this was perhaps one of the toughest campaigns for The Brazilians, considering coach Miguel Cardoso only came in six matches into the Betway Premiership to replace Manqoba Mngqithi.

"We started slow this season, and it was difficult for us because of the change of system. We tried to adjust as a team, but as I said, as time went on, we adjusted very well to the new system and started to score more goals."
