SuperSport United working on returning to Lucas Moripe Stadium

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says the club is working on returning to the Lucas Moripe Stadium this season to take some pressure off their Premier Soccer League travelling schedule.

He made the comment at the launch of the Carling Knockout tournament in Johannesburg this week after the Tshwane outfit were drawn at home against Polokwane City in the opening round of 16.

SuperSport have been playing their home matches at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo, where they were booted out of the MTN8 cup by Stellenbosch two months ago, much to Hunt’s frustration.

"Yeah, we lost in extra-time, we had a home game, playing in Polokwane – in six days we were between Durban, Polokwane, Durban, Polokwane, [while] they were waiting [without much travelling]," bemoaned Hunt.

"No excuse, but I mean, we travelled a lot that week and by the time we got back up there [in Polokwane], we were on our last legs, but we still went to extra-time and it was a bit unfortunate.

"We're trying to [move back to Tshwane]. I mean, obviously we're playing Polokwane with a home draw, so we have to get back to Lucas [Moripe] which is our home stadium."

With SuperSport not having the biggest of squads in the league, their attempts to bring some fixtures back to Atteridgeville could give them a fighting chance in the Carling Knockout tournament.

"We're very thing hey, we're going to have to really battle our way through all these competitions. Have you seen our Confed [Cup] draw? We've got a harder draw than most Champions League teams, [in terms of] who we're playing and where we're going," he added.

"And this is all around this cup time, so it's not going to be easy. We'll just take it one game at a time, just see when we get to the game, what's available, where we are, and what's our situation. We can't think too far ahead."
