Gavin Hunt to work on defensive frailties in Stellies rebuild

Hunt was not impressed with his side conceding three goals in their Betway Premiership clash against Polokwane City last night, with the game ending in a high-scoring 3-3 draw at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

He says a leaking defence was exactly why they found themselves in trouble in the previous campaign, and that he will be giving that a lot more attention.

"We lost 1-0 last week so to score three goals away from home is obviously good, but our defending left a lot to be desired because if you can't defend in this game you'll have no chance."

While they let three goals in away from home, Hunt acknowledged that they also scored three of their own, and says that should be good enough to win any football match.

Stellies have been bleeding talent in the current transfer window, and the coach says they’ve had to rebuild their team in a short space of time. He also highlighted that most of their new signings arrived unfit and have to build up some playing minutes gradually.

"The players that left were fit and the players we've brought in have done no training, which is a problem for me. You receive 5-6 weeks of training and preseason, but players arrive in the last week, but that is not our own doing. This puts you in a position where you have to throw them into the deep end and sometimes that works and they score a goal which is what happened in this game."

He added that there was very little he or the club could do about the large number of players that have left the Cape Winelands side, with most of them being offered eye-popping contracts elsewhere.
