Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong dismisses “star power” criticism

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has dismissed claims that the Super Eagles’ individual star power is holding the team back.

A stuttering start to their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign has left Nigeria six points adrift of Group C leaders South Africa, making Tuesday’s clash at the Free State Stadium a must-win.

Speaking ahead of the decisive fixture, Troost-Ekong rejected suggestions that egos or reputations are to blame for the team’s struggles.

"I live and breathe this team from the inside out, and if there's one thing I have to say about the team now, there is a real unity and togetherness. Players want to fight together for the same cause."

Nigeria must raise their level against Bafana, with Troost-Ekong conceding their destiny is no longer entirely in their own hands.

"We can only control what we can; the coach already spoke about the FIFA situation. We have got nine more points to play for, starting with this very important match-the rest is out of our control."

The Super Eagles missed out on the World Cup in Qatar three years ago, but Ekong says they are doing all they can to avoid a repeat.

Ekong concluded by acknowledging that gone are the days when CAF qualifiers were predictable.

"The level and competitiveness of teams across Africa are increasing. Times have changed from having any game that is a clear win to games in which anything can happen.

"We respect South Africa, we know that they're a good team, and we will be ready," asserted the Super Eagles captain.
