Skipper Fawaaz Basadien grounded despite transfer speculation

Bafana Bafana and Stellenbosch FC’s left-back Fawaaz Basadien says his main focus is on playing, but also says a big move in this window would be most welcome.

Speaking at the Bafana press conference, just a day before their international friendly match against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Basadien says the speculation about him will always be there.

This comes when he’s heavily linked to the big three (Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates), and with indications that the hierarchy at Stellies are strongly considering the tempting offers.

"Like I said before, it's just focusing on what I can control. Obviously, all the rumours and all of those things, it's nice to have that as a player but my main focus is just to, whatever opportunity I get to play, it's just to do well and keep doing what I'm doing,” Basadien  said.

“Keep improving each day, that's my main focus, whatever happens in the background, it's just part of the rumours that are being created. In football, in your career, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things and maybe play for the so-called big clubs or make big moves.

“It's just about the time for when it's right for you. For me, my main focus is not on wanting to move now. Obviously, I would like it but my main thing is just to keep on playing and improving each day."

Bafana head coach Hugo Broos also announced that Basadien will lead the team in tomorrow’s game against Tanzania, with Orlando Pirates’ Nkosinathi Sibisi wearing the armband in the next game against Mozambique.

The well-travelled Basadien, who spent some time in the National First Division (NFD), before moving to Moroka Swallows and eventually Stellies, is relishing this moment to lead his country.

"I didn't expect it to come so soon but at the same, it's an honour and a privilege to be captain of the national team. I mean it's one of the things you dream about growing up as a footballer but like I said, I didn't expect it to come as soon as it came but I'm ready and I'm prepared to help those who are young in the team,” he added. “When I came the first time to the team there were guys who helped me.

“So, I'm willing to do that now with the younger players and regarding the support of Polokwane. I think the last time we played here, we played in a packed stadium so I expect the same tomorrow and hopefully, the turn out will be like it was the last time we played here."
