This after she was unveiled as one of UWC’s new signings, expected to help the struggling Cape Town side to reclaim glory days.
Speaking to SABC Sport, O’Malley says she looks forward to contributing to UWC’s rebuilding phase.
“It feels amazing to be back home and to be playing in front of my family and friends again. The decision came about quite naturally after graduating in the US. I was looking for a fresh environment where I could challenge myself, and UWC’s interest aligned perfectly. Coach Thina explained the team’s vision, and I felt it was the right opportunity to contribute to something that's being rebuilt,’’ said O’Malley.
O’Malley spent close to five years playing in the United States of America, running for the University of Northwestern Ohio for more than two and subsequently played for the Western Michigan University. She believes it is the right to help contribute to developing women’s football in South Africa and use her experience to inspire the next generation of players.
“ Timing is everything. I’ve reached a point where I want to take what I’ve learned internationally and bring it back to help grow the game here. This move is very important to me because it’s not just about my career, it’s about inspiring younger players, and contributing to the development of women’s football in South Africa,’’ added O’Malley.
The 22-year-old unpacks her role at UWC and shares what is expected of her going forward.
“ My primary role will be to bring stability and leadership to the back line. I’ve been following the team’s season, and I know results haven’t always gone their way. My aim is to help solidify the defence, improve communication on the field, and bring a level of composure that can help the team build confidence and consistency,’’ she expressed.
