Sean Connor reveals Cape Town Spurs' next target after first Premiership victory

Cape Town Spurs caretaker coach Sean Connor says, now that the club has finally secured its first win in the DStv Premiership, their next target is to close the gap to Richards Bay.

Speaking after their hard-fought 2-1 league win over Orlando Pirates at Cape Town Stadium, Connor says they now need to edge closer to their nearest rivals in order to move out of 16th position on the log standings.

The 15th-placed KwaZulu-Natal side is just three points above Spurs, with the Urban Warriors having a game in hand, although they also have an inferior goal difference at present.

"We do have a target now, and we've discussed that with the players. I'd like to keep that internal, but what I will say that tonight is our first victory so we need to take a step back, analyse what we did well and didn't do well and then keep moving forward," said Connor.

"But, I think the first thing in my mind and what we can is that we need to get closer to Richards Bay, and that's our first target. Once we do that, we'll have another objective.

"But, yes, we have a points target that we discussed with the players during the week for the next five games, and we think if we can reach that target then we'll give ourselves an opportunity [of staying up]."

There’s been a strong feeling that Spurs, who were promoted via the play-offs last season, failed to strengthen their squad appropriately for a gruelling premier division campaign.

With the next transfer window only two months away, Connor has more on how they will be approaching this.

"We only had a meeting last week. We're looking at it all the time, but [the main thing is] to get the right quality into this squad now that's going to make an impact," he added.

"We have to be very careful and, again – I'll go back to the head coach appointment, I'd rather get the right plan than to just rush. We have to get the right people, and whatever role we bring people in, it's better to get the right one than the quickest one, and that's what we'll do."
