Rulani Mokwena still experimenting with new signing Tashreeq Matthews

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says he is still experimenting with one of the club’s latest signings in attacker Tashreeq Matthews.

The Brazilians added the 23-year-old to their squad in January following his transfer from Swedish outfit IK Sirius and he has so far made two appearances in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League respectively.

Mokwena admits he’s not yet figured out Matthews’ best position.

''Ja, Tash we have to be a bit patient, because his background is completely different from what he faces here, the speed of the game is different from what he was exposed to in Sweden and even prior to that in Germany.

''So let's be a bit patient, I'm not sure where we are going to play Tash, at the moment I'm trying different roles, different positions,'' said Mokwena.

The former Borussia Dortmund player comes with a reputation of being a genuine attacking threat of 11 goals and 10 assists in 33 matches for Sirius last season.

His Sundowns coach believes he will also benefit a lot from experienced campaigners like captain Themba Zwane and Lucas Costa, who is currently the club’s leading scorer.

''Good kid, very humble, very coachable and has a lot of potential. He is surrounded by very good players in that position with more experience.

"He's got an opportunity  to learn from Mshishi, Peter and Lorch - players in offensive positions. I'm sure he will cover it, it's just a matter of time,'' added Mokwena.

In contrast, Mokwena says the induction for right back Zuko Mdunyelwa has been a lot quicker for different reasons.

Zuko, what makes the adaptation process a bit faster is coachability and understanding that you're at the big club and you've got to adapt.

''I was pleasantly surprised the other day when he called me for a meeting to try and explain a few things he didn’t understand. And I like players like that who like to clarify things and want to be coached,'' he concluded.

Mdunyelwa was recruited from local rivals Chippa United as cover for Bafana Bafana international Khuliso Mudau, who is only due back from injury in about six weeks.

Mokwena has already spoken countless times about the potential he sees in Mdunyelwa, a point he reiterated after Sundowns beat TP Mazembe on Saturday.
