Sundowns close in on Thabang Matuludi as transfer window intensifies

The Bafana Bafana defender has been on Sundowns’ radar for some time, with the Brazilians first approaching Rise and Shine after Khuliso Mudau suffered a long-term injury. However, City’s valuation was initially considered too high, prompting Sundowns to turn to Deano Van Rooyen as an emergency signing.

The situation has since changed, with Matuludi struggling for regular game time and Polokwane now understood to be more open to his departure.

The public broadcaster understands Orlando Pirates had also shown interest in the 27-year-old, but the Soweto giants appear to have missed out, with Matuludi now edging closer to a move to Chloorkop.

However, there are questions internally about whether Sundowns are moving too quickly in the final weeks of the transfer window, with some concerns that the recent activity could amount to panic buying.

The Brazilians have already added Van Rooyen and are understood to have agreed a deal with former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele, while the club had initially looked overseas for reinforcements.

The transfer window closes on 21 September, increasing the urgency for Sundowns to complete their business. Matuludi’s versatility and experience make him an attractive option, particularly given their congested schedule across the Betway Premiership, domestic cup competitions and CAF Champions League.

The defender has also represented Bafana Bafana at both the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, although he did not feature in either tournament.

For now, the agreement remains subject to the final details being concluded, but Matuludi appears increasingly likely to become the latest domestic addition to Sundowns’ squad.
