The England international, making his debut for Los Blancos in Europe, clutched the back of his left thigh after just three passes at the Santiago Bernabeu, leaving the hosts with an early defensive headache.
Madrid had already fallen behind to Marseille and were reduced to ten men after Dani Carvajal's red card, but managed to secure a 2-1 victory. Despite the win, Alexander-Arnold's injury casts a shadow over Alonso's plans for the coming weeks.
In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed: "Following tests carried out today by the Real Madrid Medical Services on our player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg. Further updates will follow."
According to The Athletic, the fullback faces a six to eight-week layoff, potentially ruling him out for up to ten matches, including high-profile clashes such as the Madrid derby on September 27 and El Clasico on October 26.
Champions League fixtures against Kairat Almaty on September 30 and Juventus on October 22 are also likely to be missed.
Questions remain over his availability for the trip to Liverpool on November 4.Should Alexander-Arnold return in six weeks, he could feature against Valencia on November 2, keeping him in contention for the Liverpool match. If he requires the full eight weeks, he may not play again until after the November international break.
Alonso's immediate replacement options are limited. Carvajal, back from last season's ACL injury, is the most natural choice but faces a potential three-match Champions League ban following his red card. Alternatives include David Alaba, Raul Asencio, or even Fede Valverde, with Alonso potentially opting for a midfielder in defence to cover the right flank.
Alexander-Arnold's absence marks a tough start for Real Madrid, who face a crucial run of domestic and European fixtures over the next two months. In a message to fans, Alexander-Arnold assured he will be "back as soon as possible."
