Mayo, who donned the famous black and gold between 2003 and 2007, has implored the 27-year-old to work hard for his place in the team and not rely on the name at the back of his shirt for success at his new club.
The former striker-turned-defender also reminded his son that a lot will be expected from him by Chiefs’ demanding fan base, which he must always respect.
"The advice I can give to him is to be humble, level headed, respect the fans and work very hard because they will be expecting a lot of goal from him," said Mayo.
"So he mustn't try and put himself under extreme pressure, he must be a team player and he must work with his teammates very well, and of course work very hard."
Contrary to popular belief, Mayo says he had nothing to do with Khanyisa’s decision to join the Glamour Boys, but was just there to support him and his dream.
Though he admits it means a lot to the family to have a second generation star playing for the club at which he won numerous trophies in the mid-2000s.
"He's the one who decided to join Kaizer Chiefs. As a father, I have to just support his decision," he added.
"It means a lot [that he has joined Chiefs], but it comes with a lot of pressure because he has to work harder, and it's not going to be easy for him to just walk into the starting 11."
