Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle share the spoils in Parisian power struggle

Neither hosts Paris Saint-Germain nor Newcastle qualified for the top eight of the UEFA Champions League after they played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night in Paris.

PSG flew out of the blocks in a high-stakes scrap for a coveted top-eight place, earning a penalty inside the opening minute. Lewis Miley was harshly punished for a bouncing ball striking his arm. But Nick Pope played hero, flinging himself left to produce a stunning save and deny Ousmane Dembele from the spot.

The Magpies' escape, however, lasted barely seven minutes. Given acres of space on the edge of the area, Vitinha made Newcastle pay with a superb curling strike to put the hosts ahead.

The Parisians turned the screw and threatened to run away with it, but Pope stood tall, repelling Dembele's driven effort before reacting sharply to keep out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Newcastle weathered the storm and, completely against the run of play, landed a sucker punch in stoppage time. Dan Burn bullied his way into the box to keep a set-piece alive and Joe Willock rose to nod home his first Champions League goal, stunning the Parc des Princes faithful.

In the second stanza, Willock thought he had completed the turnaround after the break, only for the offside flag to kill the celebrations.

PSG dominated possession but looked increasingly nervous, while Newcastle almost nicked it late on when Harvey Barnes blazed wide from close range. In the end, the draw left both sides short - and facing the knockout play-offs.
