The Buccaneers are gearing up for what is expected to be an exciting new season, with new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou at the helm, as they look to again challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the coveted Betway Premiership crown.
With Maela having vacated his place in the team, and no confirmation on his next move as yet, the club has moved swiftly to confirm their on-field leadership ahead of this weekend's MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City.
29-year-old defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, now entering his fourth season with the Soweto giants since arriving from Golden Arrows in 2022, has been handed the armband, and will be deputised by 30-year-old Tapelo Xoki and 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
The announcement follows Pirates' pre-season camp in Spain, where Ouaddou would have had a thoroug assessment of the leadership qualities of the above-mentioned trio.
“It is truly an honour and privilege to be named captain of this great institution. It’s a responsibility that I accept and promise to fulfil the role in the best way I possibly can,” remarked Sibisi on the club's official website.
Sibisi also scooped the Betway Premiership Defender of the Season award at Tuesday evening's PSL Awards, which also saw Mbokazi named Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament.
