Nkota stresses focus as Bafana close in on World Cup dream

Bafana Bafana have safely arrived in Durban ahead of their crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe tomorrow evening, and Saudi-based attacker Mohau Nkota says the team is in desperate need of goals to reclaim top spot in the group.

Bafana enter the last two World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, desperate for points and goals.

They are second in Group C behind Benin, tied on 14 points, and trailing only on goal difference.

The reason why Nkota is prioritising goals.

"We want to go to the World Cup, that is the most important thing for us. We have to collect six points from these two games, and score a lot of goals in the process."

In the previous game between Bafana Bafana and the Warriors, Thapelo Morena was key, coming on as a super sub to score a brace during the 3-1 win.

South African and Zimbabwean players know each other very well; the neighbourly spirit of the two countries runs very deep, and football is no exception.

Some players have been playing together at club level, but goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says for 90 minutes, those relations will be put aside.

All the players in the current Bafana Bafana group have never been to the World Cup, and it’s understandable why reserve goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, says this is the biggest week of their football careers.

"Everybody knows that this is the biggest week of our careers, to be honest, but we don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves because what we've been doing so far has been working."
