Moroccan champions enter race for striker Tshegofatso Mabasa

Mabasa has attracted interest from several Betway Premiership clubs since leaving Orlando Pirates, but none have managed to meet his demands. 

While Stellenbosch FC were keen to sign him permanently following his loan spell in the Cape Winelands last season, negotiations failed to produce an agreement.

The public broadcaster understands Egyptian champions Pyramids FC remain interested, but their pursuit has been complicated by foreign-player quota restrictions, leaving MAS Fes as the frontrunners for his signature.

Mabasa is understood to be prioritising a fresh challenge at a club competing in the CAF Champions League, with the Moroccan side having qualified after winning the Botola Pro League title.

Although former AmaZulu coach Pablo Franco Martin, who would have been no stranger to the player, has since left the club, the public broadcaster understands Maghreb's hierarchy have admired Mabasa for some time.

Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia also revealed this week that his club attempted to sign the striker but was informed the player's preference was to continue his career outside South Africa.

It’s not just Stellies and City who were suitors, AmaZulu are believed to have also been keen but were not able to follow through on the said interest. 

Negotiations are ongoing, with a move to North Africa now appearing the most likely outcome, although Mabasa has not completely ruled out remaining in the Betway Premiership.
