Moriri praises Broos’ approach to World Cup squad selection

Bafana Bafana legend Surprise Moriri has commended Hugo Broos for how he’s selected his squad for this year’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Moriri, a member of the 2010 World Cup squad on home soil, 16 years ago, knows all about the level and the kind of footballer needed at the World Cup. 

The Mamelodi Sundowns legend is part of the 2010 World Cup legends squad that is in Mexico for a friendly with their Mexican counterparts for an exhibition match on Sunday. 

Moriri also emphasises the spirit in the change room that Broos has focused on...

"If you look at the way Hugo Broos selected his team, it was more of a team that knows each other and he's made sure that the spirit within the changing room is very good. We've got full confidence in them and we know they can still do much better. As a country and as Africans, we have a tendency of undermining ourselves so we must make sure that we surpass expectations. Anything is possible."

Moriri says with this team, having been together for a very long time, augurs well for the squad and believes that the synergy and time they have spent together makes them stronger.

Moriri, a CAF A licensed coach, has also coached and played against some of the players in the current camp as a Sundowns youth coach. He says one of their primary goals in Mexico is to provide full support to this current generation.

In 2010, Bafana collected four points from a possible nine, but it was not enough to secure a place in the knockout phase. 

But that was during the 32-team tournament, and now things have changed: the 48-team tournament debuts in this edition.
