Hunt gears up for another SuperSport rebuild

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt could be forced to rebuild the squad next season with several players either on short-term contracts, loan agreements or moving on permanently at the end of the campaign.

Key defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe will also be another big loss having already signed for Kaizer Chiefs from July 1.

"It's a major problem, something we are tackling every day. At the moment just go nine games, game to game. It's a very good point, it's a real concern. If you look at it, the team will be very thin", Hunt admitted.

Asked if he will be making use of the foreign spots that are available to recruit players, Hunt suggested it’s a lot more complex.

“When you bring in foreign players it's always difficult because you're here, and I prefer to go see them there and then bring them. We're bringing them and then you look and say 'no'.

If players are out of contract, are they really good enough, for what we are looking for? It's an ongoing thing, but the most important thing in a football club is to look after the squad", he said.

SuperSport have striker Zakhele Lepasa on loan from Orlando Pirates until the end of the season, with Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Grant Margeman, forward Thabang Sibanyoni and goalkeeper Ricardo Goss on similar arrangements. Hunt explained what could be his approach next season.

"Not too old, not too young. The right balance, who's coming, who's going? The future in football is now, but you always got have one eye on what's happening, so for me, it's a big concern".

But could the coach look to his reserve league side and promote young players to fill the gap?

"They need to be right, be good enough, and we're doing a great job here so far. If you look at our two teams, the PSL team and our Diski team where they are, it's not too bad. So it's important we don't just say 'they are doing well, we must take them now'.

And sometimes you may have somebody blocking them because of the age in the first team. So you got a 24, 25-year-old and you've got a good 17-year-old, but he needs a little bit more time, so he may be alone. Every individual is a different case".
