Leandra Smeda unpacks 2025 HWBSL campaign with TS Galaxy

Smeda netted 22 goals to help The Rockets finish third on the log with 69 points, which earned a nomination for Player of the Season alongside JVW’s Bonolo Mokoma and RefilweTholakele of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. 

Speaking to SABC Sport, Smeda says the experience gained over the years while playing abroad has been the key contributor to her good form on home soil. 

“I’m really happy with my achievement as top goal scorer of the 2025 season and also for being nominated for player of the season,” said Smeda. 

“I think this shows that I can still compete with the best in the league. I think the experience I’ve gained over the years while playing abroad has contributed to how I got to express myself in the Hollywoodbets Super League.”

The Mpumalanga outfit registered 21 wins in 30 outings last season, and this is what the veteran striker had to say regarding the overall team performance. 

“Again,  I think the experience I’ve gained playing abroad helped me to quickly adapt to the team, the league and it also allowed me to put in good performances throughout the season,” she added.  

“I think as a team we performed really well, but we could’ve done better, but we also dropped points in crucial games towards the end of the season – I think that is something we can hopefully rectify this season.” 

TS Galaxy coach Sizwe Sibiya also received a nomination for the Coach of Year award, alongside Godfrey Sapula and Janine van Wyk, with Smeda praising her mentor for how well he’s done with the team. 

 ”Mr Sibiya is a good coach. He allows us as players to express ourselves which I like. I think he’s done well at the club and I’d like to congratulate him on his nomination.  

“This shows that people are seeing the good work that he’s doing at TS Galaxy Queens,” she concluded.
