Lawyer demands action as Samir Nurkovic pursues R15m claim

The lawyer representing striker Samir Nurkovic in his ongoing R15-million payout dispute has urged the Premier Soccer League and SAFA to resolve the matter by settling the amount owed to the player.

SABC Sport reported last week that Nurkovic, through his attorney Davor Lazic, had opened disciplinary proceedings against both bodies for failing to use funds from Royal AM’s monthly grant as a solution.

With the club now defunct, Lazic insists it is up to the two federations to ensure the Serbian striker receives what is due to him.

"There are rules and procedures, you just need to respect them. I do advise different stakeholders in football, not only players but also clubs, agents, and national associations.

"My advice for everyone is to respect your own rules and respect the contract."

Lazic believes this approach would help the PSL, especially, to preserve its reputation.

"Of course I'm on the opposite side, but if I were advising them I would say - the risk for the PSL and SAFA is much smaller if you pay the player compared to going into these proceedings because then you might receive different bans from FIFA.

"I'm not saying we're going to succeed, but there is risk on the other side."

Four years later, the lawyer added that at first the case was amusing given the arguments presented by Royal AM but it has now gone on for too long.

According to the experienced attorney, the decision to go after the PSL and SAFA as a way to claim the R15-million is unprecedented.

"I'm looking forward to see what the reaction will be from all sides now because there are no similar situations, I couldn't find any precedent or case law in this regard because the system is respected in most cases. National Football Associations are aware of their duties and obligations."
