Kaizer Chiefs players mentality lauded in victory over SuperSport United

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson says the mentality and the attitude of his players played a big part in their 2-1 win over SuperSport United on Saturday.

This was only Chiefs' second victory in 2024 as goals from Christian Saile and Mduduzi Shabalala ensured Amakhosi returned to the DStv Premiership top eight.

Having lost their last three league matches on the trot, Johnson credited the attitude of his players for this victory.

"The mentality of my players, and the effort of my players, against a team that normally breaks you down mentally and against a coach that's astute in how he sets up his team," said Johnson.

"Playing against them with a mixture of technique and mental strength, plus the physical attributes that come along with his team, our team was able to match those things in a lot of moments."

But Johnson was also quick to admit this victory has not brought relief to the team, though they have now turned the corner ahead of the big encounter against reigning champions and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

"No, I don't think anybody should be relieved. There are still five games left to play, and we as Kaizer Chiefs are not relieved with that [one win]," he added.

"If it was the other way around, with five wins [in a row] and maybe today we had a draw, then we would be upset, but I think we have just turned a little bit of a corner and we've got to prepare ourselves better for the next game."
