Iraola backs Alexander Isak to keep firing for Liverpool after Brighton win

Andoni Iraola has backed Alexander Isak to continue scoring goals after the Liverpool striker helped secure a 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool struck twice in quick succession during the first half, with Pascal Gross turning the ball into his own net before Isak added the second goal to extend his impressive scoring run.

The Sweden international has now scored six goals in seven league appearances this season, including three in his last four matches, as he begins to justify the 125 million pounds Liverpool paid Newcastle for his services.

Iraola believes Isak will continue to deliver if Liverpool provide him with the right opportunities in front of goal.

"If we can put him in those positions, we can provide him good crosses, good situations, he will score the goals," Iraola said.

The Liverpool boss was delighted with the team's response after their disappointing 3-0 defeat against Manchester City. The Reds have now won four consecutive matches in all competitions and climbed to fourth in the Premier League table, one point behind third-placed Brighton and six adrift of leaders City.

"Very happy for today, very happy overall for this fourth win," Iraola said.

"We faced a very good opposition and it was key how we started today. We needed a strong start, be aggressive, recover balls, win our duels, be dangerous in transitions."

Liverpool also avoided falling behind for the first time in several recent matches, allowing them to control the contest after their early goals.

"Today we've started better and the game has gone differently," Iraola added.

There was, however, concern over Florian Wirtz, who was forced off with an ankle injury. Iraola was hopeful the problem was not serious but admitted Liverpool would need to assess the playmaker with fixtures coming every three days.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler was disappointed his side failed to take anything from a match in which they enjoyed 64 per cent possession and registered 17 shots. Yasin Ayari struck the post, but the visitors managed only one effort on target.

Hurzeler felt Brighton had done enough to deserve a better result, particularly before Liverpool opened the scoring.

"I think everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players," he said.

"There was a missed opportunity for us. Before they scored, we had one, two big chances and I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn't score."

Brighton's defence had gone more than nine hours without conceding before Liverpool broke through. Hurzeler acknowledged that the hosts defended their penalty area effectively, blocking numerous attempts as his team struggled to convert possession into goals.

"They really defended the box well. We didn't have that efficiency," he said.
