I will tell Shandre Campbell the truth – Gavin Hunt

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has vowed to be honest with young Shandre Campbell throughout what looks set to be a promising career for the winger.

The 18-year-old scored twice in the club’s 3-1 victory over Richards Bay on Saturday afternoon to help Matsatsantsa progress to the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Hunt says he is the only one who will tell the teenager “the truth”.

"Well, I'm the only one who will tell him the truth one day. You as the media won't tell the truth, that's the truth. So, me, his parents are not going to tell him the truth, his agent is not going to tell him the truth, I'm the only one who tells him the truth. So, that's my job to keep people's feet in the ground, keep them working, keep them doing things, getting better," Hunt said.

Campbell picked up yet another Man of the Match award and in his interview with SABC Sport admitted Hunt had been one of the strong pillars in his breakthrough season.

Although delighted with the youngsters’ form on the day, Hunt argued it only makes his task as a coach a lot harder.

"This doesn't help as well, does it? Fantastic, he scored two goals but this doesn't help, we need him to go through a little bit. I'm the guy that's going to pick up the pieces all the time and say hey, this, that, you know," Hunt added.

SuperSport have relied heavily on their academy players this season while they were juggling their domestic and continental commitments.

It’s not just Campbell who has stood out, defender Ime Okon is another one Hunt says needs guidance.

"Like Okon is being all over the media, this, that, Nigeria, the only one in the best value in that Nigeria team. You know the ones that play Sunday afternoons, sorry, it's a joke. So, you need to keep these boys' feet on the ground. I've done it for years with many of them."
