Hunt picks out Chumani Butsaka for praise in Chiefs win

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt believes Chumani Butsaka was the difference for them in their victory over Kaizer Chiefs last night at FNB Stadium.

While Langelihle Phili was on the score sheet again for his seventh goal of the season in the 2-1 win, the coach says there’s still a bit of work he has to do on his game to give more to the team. Hunt made an early tactical change with Butsaka coming in for Wayde Jooste just after the half hour mark, and says this turned things in their favour to set them up perfectly for the second half.

"I think there's a lot he's got to do still - with the ball and without the ball. He is a top goalscorer which is magnificent from his perspective, but for me I think he can be so much better.

"The player that changed the game tonight was Chumani Butsaka, and he is another great player who can also do so much more for us."

"I think wingers have got to play with wingers if you understand what I'm trying to say to you. Over the last 20 years, I've had the best wingers in South Africa.

"There was no specific plan, but wingers have to visualise the moment in training. When the ball goes wide, the other winger has to be in the box and he was."

He was also happy with the tactical awareness of his wide players. Man-of-the-Match Devin Titus scored the winner but not before a pin-point cross to Phili for their first, and the former Durban City coach says the alignment is straight from the training ground.

Hunt was reluctant to say whether Chiefs could have had one eye on the derby this coming Saturday or not, but did mention that they might have thought the match against his side was the easier of the two this week.

The Cape Winelands team was recently knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup, and Hunt suggested that perhaps it’s for their own good to get their house in order in domestic league football. They have not had the best of seasons compared to their heroics last term where they finished in third place in the Betway Premiership.
