Betway Premiership: Mamelodi Sundowns go top with late AmaZulu win

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership with a 1-0 victory over AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday, settled by a late Marcelo Allende strike.

The Chilean midfielder struck in the 84th minute to hand Masandawana maximum points and move them onto 38 points - level with Orlando Pirates but ahead on goals scored.

Coming off a disappointing Nedbank Cup last-16 exit to TS Galaxy, Sundowns responded with a bold selection call, making 10 changes to their starting XI. Only Katlego Ntsabeleng retained his place. AmaZulu, fresh from edging Richards Bay to reach the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals, made just one change, recalling Luyolo Slatsha.

Sundowns controlled possession from the outset and asked early questions of the Usuthu defence. Khulumani Ndamane twice came close - first forcing Darren Johnson into a sharp one-handed save from a header, and then firing narrowly wide from distance.

Despite the visitors' dominance, clear-cut chances were limited. Ntsabeleng curled an effort off target, while the final ball often lacked precision.

The Brazilians were dealt a setback on the half-hour mark when Thapelo Morena limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, prompting the introduction of Nuno Santos.

AmaZulu's best opportunity of the opening period arrived five minutes before the break. Riaan Hanamub surged down the left and picked out Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, but Ronwen Williams produced a superb one-on-one save to preserve parity. Hendrick Ekstein fired over from the rebound as the hosts threatened to punish Sundowns' wastefulness.

The second half opened at a quicker tempo. Jayden Adams headed wide from an Aubrey Modiba corner, while Brayan Leon tested Johnson with a fierce drive before later dragging a shot inches wide after being played through.

AmaZulu also had their moments. Hanamub remained a threat down the flank, and Athini Maqokolo nearly capitalised on a looping delivery, rounding Williams but firing wide from a tight angle.

As the contest stretched, substitute Allende nearly broke the deadlock when he cut inside and rattled the crossbar.

With six minutes remaining, the breakthrough finally arrived. A poor clearance fell invitingly on the edge of the area and Allende reacted quickest, drilling a low strike into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd.

AmaZulu pushed forward in the closing moments in search of an equaliser, but Sundowns held firm to secure a hard-fought victory.

The result lifts Masandawana back to the summit, underlining their resilience after cup disappointment. AmaZulu, meanwhile, remain fifth on 30 points after 18 matches.

Sundowns will now turn their attention to Sekhukhune United, while Usuthu prepare for a clash against Stellenbosch as the title race continues to intensify.
