How Mamelodi Sundowns plan to tackle domestic return

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has discussed how he plans to approach their return to DStv Premiership action – 67 days since The Brazilians last featured in a domestic league game.

The defending champions face SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby tomorrow night at Lucas Moripe Stadium as they now try to make up for lost time and play catch up with five games in hand.

Sundowns did go all the way in the inaugural African Football League, and Mokwena says their character going forward will not change.

"It's difficult to speak about that because the reality is [that] we just go one game at a time, and we try to – in fact, not even one game at a time, one session at a time, and we try to win the day," said Mokwena.

"We try to make sure that whatever it is that we have to participate in, we do it to the best of our ability, and if it's a friendly game, we try to win that friendly; if it's a small-sided game in training, we try to win that, and that's the mentality we've tried to instill."

When they faced FC Nouadhibou in their CAF Champions League group stage opener on Sunday, the club announced there were 10 players ruled out through injuries.

Mokwena won’t make excuses with the demands only set to increase.

"I haven't complained about the number of injuries, I've spoken about them. I haven't complained about the number of games, I've spoken about the volume of games," he added.

"Because at a club like Sundowns, I know you're going to laugh, but the reality is, who cares? If I start complaining, who's listening and who cares for my complaints?

"So we have to go on with the business and win games, and try to do the best we can, and that's what we try to do – no excuses."
