Holders Argentina cruise past Honduras in comfortable World Cup warm-up victory

Argentina continued their preparations for the FIFA World Cup with a controlled 2-0 win over Honduras in Texas on Saturday, underlining their depth even without captain Lionel Messi on the pitch.

The reigning world champions were dominant throughout at Kyle Field in College Station, with goals from Lautaro Martinez and Giuliano Simeone securing victory in their penultimate warm-up match before the tournament begins on June 11.

Despite a lively atmosphere inside the stadium, Argentina took time to settle before gradually asserting control. Messi, recovering from muscle fatigue sustained in late May, remained on the bench throughout as coach Lionel Scaloni carefully managed his squad ahead of the group stage.

The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute when Nicolas Tagliafico was brought down inside the box, allowing Martinez to calmly dispatch the resulting penalty into the bottom-left corner and give Argentina a deserved lead.

Argentina continued to create chances before and after the interval, with Giovani Lo Celso striking the woodwork with a curling effort from distance, as Honduras struggled to gain any attacking foothold.

The second goal arrived shortly after the restart, with Martinez once again at the heart of the move. The Inter Milan forward produced a clever backheel to release Simeone, who adjusted quickly before finishing low past goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar to double the advantage in the 54th minute.

With the result effectively secured, Scaloni rotated heavily, though Messi was not introduced. His return remains uncertain, with the coaching staff indicating his recovery will depend on ongoing medical assessment, though he is expected to be available for the World Cup opener.

After the match, Martinez stressed Argentina's determination to defend their crown, saying the squad were fully committed to "giving everything to leave Argentina as high as possible."

Scaloni, meanwhile, praised the team's identity and structure despite experimenting with personnel, insisting that their playing style remains intact as they build towards the tournament.

"We're looking to maintain our identity," he said, highlighting the importance of consistency even during squad rotation.

Statistically, Argentina's dominance was clear, registering 20 shots and over 2 expected goals, while Honduras failed to register a single attempt on target. Simeone stood out as one of the most influential figures, contributing both creatively and offensively, while Martinez once again delivered in a decisive moment.

Argentina now turn their attention to their final warm-up match against Iceland, before opening their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16, where Messi is expected to return to action as the three-time champions begin their title defence.
