Hansi Flick's Barcelona blueprint: Champions League glory in sight

In a revealing interview with Barca ONE, Hansi Flick, who signed a contract extension last week until 2027, shared an in-depth review of his debut season with Barcelona.

The German manager expressed delight at the campaign's outcome but stressed that the Champions League remains the ultimate target for the Blaugrana. He pinpointed November and December as the toughest months, with the intense derby against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium standing out as a defining challenge.

"We can be content," Flick said. "It's brilliant to see how everything has come together. Working with these players and this club is fantastic. At Barcelona, the expectation is always to win trophies, and in our first season, we've claimed three. It was a solid result."

Flick's optimism shone through as he reflected on the pre-season, where young talents like 15-year-old Toni Fernandez impressed. "I always think positively, it's the best way to approach this job," he remarked. "We saw quality, hunger, great attitude, and huge potential in the squad. We worked hard, and I believe we've done a lot right. When you see commitment in training and a love for the work, it's a good sign. High-quality sessions often translate to matches, and that's what happened. We aimed to improve every day."

The 54-year-old admitted November and December tested the team. "It wasn't easy, but we stayed calm because we believed in our approach," Flick explained. "It was a tough period, but it worked out in the end." A low point came during the Espanyol clash, which he watched from a small room due to a touchline ban. "It wasn't pleasant, I couldn't be on the bench, and no one could hear me. But after the Atletico game, I told the players if we played like that, we'd win again. Post-break, we worked hard, and winning in 2025 built confidence and belief."

The Defining DerbySurprisingly, Flick didn't name a clash with giants like Real Madrid as the season's key game. "The Espanyol match was the most important," he insisted. "Real Madrid scored with five seconds left the day before, and I knew the derby would be tough. Espanyol defended well and hit us on the counter, but we kept a clean sheet and got two goals from Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez. It's brilliant to have youngsters at this level, they can decide matches and titles."

Atletico ChallengeBanned for the Atletico de Madrid game, Flick watched his side perform at a high level. "Atletico had fantastic attacking ability and players who could win games," he said. "In Barcelona, people can think too negatively, but I wanted to show we were on the right path. In football, like life, trusting those around you is key."

Standout StarsJules Kounde's goal in the Copa del Rey final impressed Flick. "I saw him attacking, pressing late in the game, and I knew if the ball stayed alive, it'd be a goal," he said.

On Lamine Yamal, he was effusive: "He's a genius at 17. We must help him because it seems easy now, but staying at the top for 15 years means training well and being mentally sharp. He's smart, but it's about work too."

Raphinha also earned praise. "I saw him live and noticed his potential, heart, mentality, and quality," Flick said. For Pedri, he sees leadership potential: "It's fantastic to watch Pedri, he elevates the game. I recall the Valencia match. He could be a leader in the coming years, and I'll help him become one."

Chasing Champions League Glory"It's not about perfection, it's about progression," Flick concluded. "When I see the team improving, that's what I want. We're here to help each player be their best. We aim for Champions League level and want the title. It's not easy, but we must work intensely, stay united, and show we're a great team, defending and attacking together."

Barcelona have laid a strong foundation, and with Flick's sights set on Europe, the future looks bright for the Catalan giants.
