Gavin Hunt sees MTN8 as financial windfall for SuperSport United

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is eyeing the prize money bonanza in the MTN8 because of the financial windfall it would bring the club.

Matsatsantsa’s first hurdle is to beat Stellenbosch FC on Sunday afternoon at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in the quarterfinals.

The competition comes with R8-million for the winner which the side can reinvest, use to pay salaries or recruit more players.

"Huge, financially, it's always been a big financial [boost] versus early days and it's a good trophy because you can get to the first round. I think you've got extra two games that can help you with your squad and see who they are," Hunt said.

"It obviously gets a good start to the season. You play all year to get into this competition from last season, which is good. Let's see, it's not gonna be an easy game. No games will be easy at this level."

SuperSport are coming off the back of a deflating goalless draw in the DStv Premiership away to AmaZulu on Wednesday – Hunt was visibly annoyed with the result when speaking to SABC Sport.

"Yeah, they went a man down. I mean, you can do what you like. You can go in there but couldn't get in there, couldn't find a break. When it was 11v11 we could have been up earlier in the game but we didn't.

That's football for you, chances missed but we worked hard. They obviously doubled the efforts, they got something out of it. Fair play to them."

He expects the Stellies game won’t be that much different from Usuthu, although there has to be a winner in this quarterfinal tie.

"There'll be a similar game. They are very tough, they're disciplined, they're hard-working. There are certain things we gotta be careful of because every opponent will give you something different. Ya, let's see what we can patch up together and put a team up for Sunday."
