European tour a possibility for Sundowns Ladies, says sporting director

Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg has not ruled out the possibility of the club’s successful women’s team touring Europe.

Recently, the veteran administrator had been instrumental in organising a pre-season tour in Holland for the senior men’s side as well as sending the U15 academy to feature in the Kevin De Bruyne Cup.

Berg explains the approach to improving a squad fresh from winning a second CAF Champions League crown earlier this month.

"I think we can because it's all to say, okay. One thing very important is that it can be completely different things that are needed at different times for the different teams," explained Berg.

"If you treat everyone the same way, you don't treat them equal. You have to go in and say, 'What is needed right here, right now for this team? How do we develop this team?'

"If that is [through] a certain camp or going to play an international tournament abroad, I would really like that, but we're not going to do it just because we have done it with someone else.

"We have to identify what is the best for this team, what is the target for this team, and how do we achieve the best possible, and what is the right timing for it?

"So, yes, it's definitely a possibility if that is what we identify as the best step for this team."

With FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirming talks to start the Women’s Club World Cup, the Sundowns sporting director believes the Brazilians should also start aligning with that possibility for coach Jerry Tshabalala’s side.

"Let's see what we can do around that because international experience and exposure is very important for the team," added the Dane.

"You hear them having ambitions, and the club having ambitions of the Club World Cup, so we'll have to prepare them for that, and we can only prepare them by playing the teams we're going to play in the Club World Cup."
