DStv Prem wrap: SuperSport miss out on top spot, Swallows edge Galaxy

SuperSport United were denied top spot in the league by Polokwane City as Moroka Swallows edged TS Galaxy in DStv Premiership action on Wednesday evening.

SuperSport United missed out on the chance to go top of the table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Gavin Hunt's side were in line for a fourth consecutive league win as they bossed proceedings in Polokwane before finally taking the lead 18 minutes from time through substitute Etiosa Ighodaro.

But they were pegged back just nine minutes later as Tholo Matuludi equalised for Rise and Shine to earn them a share of the spoils and deny Matsatsantsa a chance to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns, who have been away in African Football League action for the past few weeks.

Polokwane were seeking their first win in three league matches following back-to-back draws against Sekhukhune United and Orlando Pirates, while SuperSport looked capitalise on Golden Arrows' 1-0 defeat to Royal AM on Tuesday.

Both teams had late opportunities to win it, with Ighodaro lashing a shot just wide of the right post from distance in the 84th minute before Appollis drew a routine save out of Goss moments later after being played in on the left by Puleng Tlolane.

Meanwhile in Soweto, the Dube Birds edged out The Rockets 1-0, thanks to a brilliant goal from defender Keenan Phillips at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday night.

Philips embarked on a brilliant solo down the right flank before beating goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari with a thunderous shot and Swallows were leading 1-0 at the interval.

At the other end, keeper Daniel Akpeyi was tested in the 65th minute and he saved an attempt from Nkosikhona Radebe to ensure that the game ended in a 1-0 win for Steve Komphela's charges.

The narrow victory elevated Amaswaiswai to the fifth spot on the league standings before they next square off with Polokwane City on Saturday.

Galaxy, on the other hand, slipped to 12th spot on the standings and are scheduled to next lock horns also with Polokwane City on 26 November, after this weekend's clash with Sundowns was postponed.
