This comes after Bantwana secured their place in the final qualifying round following a goalless draw against Tanzania at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mafumo says the team is looking forward to a successful final round as their sights remain firmly set on representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
“I am so happy that we have qualified for the next round. Going to the World Cup would mean everything to us. Approaching the next game, we just need to work hard, be confident and maintain a positive mindset. We have to trust ourselves and trust in God,” said Mafumo.
Mafumo played a key role in helping the team keep clean sheets across both legs against Tanzania, and she reflected on her standout performances.
“To be honest, the glory belongs to God. That was not me playing, but God taking full control. I am really proud of my contribution today. I knew that getting another clean sheet would give us an advantage. I am glad that we understood the mandate and delivered what the technical team instructed us to do. Now the focus is on Kenya and making sure that we book that all-important World Cup spot,” added Mafumo.
Bantwana will be aiming for their third FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup appearance, having previously participated in the 2010 tournament in Trinidad and Tobago and the 2018 edition in Uruguay. This year’s tournament will take place in Morocco from 17 October to 7 November.
“The World Cup experience would mean so much to all of us. It will contribute to our football profiles and also help grow the women’s game in South Africa. We want to go there and fly the South African flag high, compete at the highest level and not just make up the numbers,” she expressed.
