The deal follows Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi’s recent decision to reject an initial bid from Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, with the club holding firm in its valuation of one of its most prized assets.
Sukazi had made it clear that Galaxy would not entertain offers that did not reflect Dithejane’s growing stature and importance to the team.
Although the exact transfer fee has not yet been disclosed, the public broadcaster has been informed that Chicago Fire tabled a substantial offer that ultimately convinced Galaxy to release the player.
The MLS club are also preparing to welcome Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi next week, highlighting a continued focus on recruiting top South African talent.
Sources close to the situation indicate that Dithejane attracted strong interest from several clubs, with Galaxy initially exploring the possibility of a move to Europe as the preferred pathway for the player’s development.
However, Chicago Fire’s proposal, both financially and in terms of opportunity, proved decisive.
Galaxy were not opposed to selling Dithejane to a domestic rival, with Sukazi previously acknowledging interest from Kaizer Chiefs, though no formal talks were held with the Soweto giants. The 21-year-old, a former Chiefs youth product, had also been linked with a return to Naturena, but that option has now fallen away.
Chicago Fire recently offered Orlando Pirates around R53-million to sign Mbokazi as part of their U22 Initiative, a programme under which Dithejane also qualifies.
It is understood that the final paperwork is close to completion, with confirmation expected shortly.
Dithejane trained with Galaxy on Thursday morning, but indications are that he will depart before the club’s next league match against Marumo Gallants, pending the conclusion of all contractual formalities.
