Few gave the Blue Sharks much chance against a Spanish side ranked among the tournament favourites, but a disciplined defensive performance and an inspired display from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha secured one of the biggest shocks of the opening round.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper emerged as the hero of the evening, producing a string of crucial saves as Spain dominated possession and territory but repeatedly failed to find a breakthrough. At the final whistle, an emotional Vozinha was named Player of the Match after helping his nation collect a historic first World Cup point.
Spain controlled nearly three-quarters of possession and fired 27 shots at goal, yet Cape Verde's organised defensive structure frustrated Luis de la Fuente's side throughout the contest. The African nation sat deep in a compact low block, crowding their own penalty area and forcing Spain into a patient but largely ineffective passing game.
The Europeans struggled to create clear openings during a sluggish first half. Marc Cucurella threatened from distance early on before Cape Verde's resistance was rewarded by a series of outstanding interventions from Vozinha.
The goalkeeper denied Pedri before watching Ferran Torres strike the crossbar from close range. Moments later, he recovered brilliantly to claw away Mikel Oyarzabal's looping header, preserving the deadlock. Torres was thwarted again shortly before the break, while Aymeric Laporte's powerful header was tipped around the post by another excellent save.
Spain increased the pressure after halftime and eventually introduced Lamine Yamal from the bench. The Barcelona teenager, returning from a hamstring injury, immediately added urgency to Spain's attack and helped create several openings, including a late chance for Oyarzabal that was blocked by Roberto Lopes.
As Spain pushed forward in search of a winner, Cape Verde nearly completed an even greater upset when Dani Borges tested Unai Simon with a late header.
While Spain were left frustrated, Cape Verde departed with confidence after earning a point against one of the tournament favourites. The result leaves the World Cup newcomers well placed heading into their remaining Group H fixtures and strengthens their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
