South Africa's quest to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title took a hit on Friday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by an inspired Tanzania side in Oudja.
The result ended Banyana Banyana's seven-match WAFCON winning streak, though they remain unbeaten in 13 matches in the tournament proper under coach Desiree Ellis.
Tanzania made history by earning their first ever WAFCON point and taking the lead for the first time in the competition. Opah Clement gave them a shock advantage midway through the first half, and the Twiga Stars went on to dominate for 70 minutes.
Despite South Africa missing early chances - Kgalebane Mohlakoana volleyed over and Hildah Magaia failed to connect properly with a header - they drew level through veteran defender Bambanani Mbane, who netted her fifth international goal. It marked the first time Banyana had conceded in a WAFCON finals match since Ellis took charge.
Tanzania nearly restored their lead when Elizabeth Chenge chipped over Kaylin Swart, only for Karabo Dhlamini to clear off the line.
Another goal-line clearance came earlier from Lonathemba Mhlongo following a header. Chenge was later sent off for a reckless stamp on Linda Motlhalo's Achilles heel in the dying moments.
Tanzania's goalkeeper, Najat Idrisa, was instrumental in securing the draw, producing vital saves from Jermaine Seoposenwe's long-range effort and a 25-yard drive by Fikile Magama.
South Africa, now on four points, will face fellow group leaders Mali in their final Group C match. Tanzania, on one point, will meet Ghana.

Ghana and Mali played to a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested clash. Alice Kusi gave Ghana the lead after a dominant first half, but Aissata Traore equalised early in the second period for Mali.
Despite Ghana's late pressure, Mali's defence stood strong, leaving both sides tied on points with one game remaining.
